How to Apply

Preliminary Inquiry
Please note that New Field Foundation is limited in the number of new grants we can make each year to organizations we have not previously funded. This is due to our commitment to organizations that we fund over several years (please see grants awarded for details). However, New Field is open to receiving introductory information from organizations that have carefully reviewed our priorities and are a strong match in terms of programmatic focus, institutional identity, women’s leadership and geographic location. If you believe this to be the case, you can complete a preliminary inquiry form:
Please note that submission of a preliminary inquiry form is only the first step in the process and does not guarantee funding.

Preliminary Review Process
New Field spends significant time getting to know an organization before inviting a full proposal. This can take several months and is done in a variety of ways, including:
  • Review of a preliminary inquiry form;
  • Email correspondence with key personnel;
  • Consultation with New Field’s local advisors and consultants.
Full Proposal Process
Please note that full proposals are by invitation only.

Organizations invited to submit a full proposal are those whose mission, programs and impact match New Field’s funding priorities. When inviting a proposal, New Field provides detailed guidelines and discusses with the organization appropriate timing and likely funding range for the application. Once a full proposal is received, it is reviewed in detail by the New Field team, references are checked, and a grant recommendation presented to the New Field board of directors. The grant is not final until approved by Tides Foundation. This process can take as long as eight months to complete. It should be noted that submission of a full proposal does not guarantee a grant award.

General Proposal Guidelines
  • Organizations can apply for institutional development, program activities, and administrative support as defined by the applicant organization.
  • New Field usually starts with a one-year grant for organizations being supported by New Field for the first time;
  • New Field typically does not make grants for amounts that are more than 30 per cent of an organization’s annual income.
What We Do Not Fund
Grants are NOT awarded for the following:
  • Individuals (except as part of the activities of an organization or group);
  • Natural disaster relief;
  • Lobbying activities, including activities to influence legislators or voters on specific, pending legislation; and participation or intervention in an election campaign that expresses a view in support or opposition to a candidate for public office; or
  • Religious activities.
Reporting Requirements
Recent changes in U.S. law mean organizations receiving international grants must adhere to particular reporting requirements. These include:
  • Interim and final financial reports detailing the expenditure of the grant;
  • A narrative and grant expenditure progress report at nine months from the date the grant is disbursed, for each year of the grant;
  • A copy of the organization’s annual financial reports (audited if possible) when they become available, but no later than six months after the close of fiscal year during which the grant is given.
